CHM4297   Advanced Organic Chemistry for Chemical Engineers   (20 credits)

Description

This module builds upon CHM2204 to extend your knowledge of some more advanced aspects of organic chemistry. The application of frontier molecular orbital theory in organic chemistry to rationalise configuration, conformation and reactivity will be illustrated. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic reaction mechanisms and reactivity will be described, and systematic methods to characterise transition states and high energy intermediates will be highlighted. The synthesis of cyclic compounds containing one or more heteroatoms is addressed. Saturated, unsaturated and particularly aromatic heterocyclic compounds will be discussed, and their properties and characteristic reactivities compared and contrasted. This module then develops organic synthetic analysis using the retrosynthetic approach. It will introduce novel reagents and methods which allow the synthesis of organic molecules to be devised using less obvious but highly economical transformations. The elaboration of aromatic compounds is addressed. Electrophilic and nucleophilic aromatic substitution and metalation processes will be discussed.
